Butylene Glycol Humectants

Humectant and solvent

Butylene Glycol helps attract and hold moisture while improving the spreadability of hair products.

May suit
Those looking for hydrated, smoother-feeling hair or lighter-feeling formulations.

Worth knowing
It is commonly used to help ingredients dissolve and to give formulas a soft, glide-on texture. It appears in many leave-in and rinse-off products due to its versatility.
Glycolic Acid Exfoliating acids

Alpha hydroxy acid

An alpha hydroxy acid used to gently exfoliate and help smooth the hair cuticle.

May suit
Those looking for smoother-feeling hair or gentle scalp exfoliation.

Worth knowing
Glycolic Acid is widely used in both skincare and haircare for its ability to refine texture and support healthy moisture balance. In haircare formulas, it is typically included at controlled levels to condition and enhance manageability.
Niacinamide Anti-dandruff / scalp care

Scalp-supporting vitamin

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that helps support a balanced scalp environment and improve hair resilience.

May suit
Those looking to support scalp comfort, strengthen hair, or maintain a healthy-looking scalp barrier.

Worth knowing
It is commonly used in both skincare and haircare for its soothing and barrier-supporting properties. It pairs well with many other ingredients and is generally well tolerated.
Sodium Hydroxide pH adjusters

pH adjuster

Helps control and stabilise the pH of haircare formulations.

May suit
Those interested in how product pH affects scalp comfort or hair cuticle behaviour.

Worth knowing
It is used in very small amounts to bring a formula to the desired pH range. Once adjusted, it does not act as a strong alkaline agent in the finished product.
2-Hexanediol Solvents

Solvent and humectant

Helps dissolve other ingredients and provides light moisture to haircare formulas.

May suit
Those interested in lightweight, non-greasy formulas that spread easily.

Worth knowing
It is also used as a preservative booster to support formula stability.
Panthenol Conditioning agents

Conditioning agent

Helps condition, soften and add a smooth, healthy feel to the hair.

May suit
Most hair types, especially dry or dull hair.

Worth knowing
A versatile, well-tolerated conditioning ingredient.
Sodium Hyaluronate Humectants

Hydrating humectant

Draws moisture into the hair and helps maintain hydration.

May suit
Those with dry, dehydrated or coarse hair seeking added softness and moisture retention.

Worth knowing
It is the salt form of hyaluronic acid and is widely used because it can hold many times its weight in water. In haircare, it helps support smoother, more manageable strands without adding heaviness.
Xanthan Gum Thickeners and stabilisers

Thickener and stabiliser

Xanthan Gum helps thicken and stabilise haircare formulas for a smooth, consistent texture.

May suit
People who prefer products with a richer or more gel-like texture.

Worth knowing
It is a polysaccharide widely used in cosmetics to keep formulas uniform and easy to apply. It works well alongside many other common ingredients.
